The Free State Symphony Orchestra will bring to
life Beethoven’s relaxed and
lyrical Symphony No. 4 on Saturday 8
June at the Odeion School of Music. The concert starts at 19:30 and will open
with Mendelssohn’s Son and Stranger overture. Also on the programme is Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major concerto, an early work which is characterized
by his quick wit and down-to-earth charm, written
when he often favoured his players with prominent solos in his symphonies and
treated his best musicians to concertos written with them in mind. This will feature
cellist Jacques-Pierre Malan as
soloist.
Malan is taking the classical music world
by storm with his unparalleled performances, innovative projects, and
uncompromising dedication to energizing and uplifting both audiences and
musicians alike. His initiatives have landed him on stages across the world
from Africa to Europe to the USA. He is currently based in Baltimore Maryland,
allowing him access to America’s greatest musicians and performing
opportunities. Serving as an ambassador for South African classical musicians
within the USA, Malan works tirelessly as a solo, chamber, and orchestral
musician, as well as a dedicated teacher and program coordinator.
South African conductor David Scarr received his early musical
training in the English Choral tradition, later completing his Bachelor of
Music studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth,
as well as gaining Licentiates in French Horn Performance and Brass Pedagogy
from the Royal Schools of Music, London, and UNISA. He has directed
performances in the opera, choral, symphonic and chamber orchestra genres in
South Africa, Australia, Spain, Portugal, Rumania and Slovakia, including
directing the world premieres of both opera and symphonic works. He is a principal guest conductor of the
Schönbrunn Palace Orchestra and pursues an active international performing and
teaching career. He is currently Head of Music at Grey College Junior School in
Port Elizabeth.
These two prominent South
African musicians take to the stage with the FSSO for an unforgettable evening
of symphonic rendezvous of note.
