The Free State Youth Orchestra (FSYO) is hosting a compelling symphony concert on May 3rd at the Odeion School of Music under the baton of Alexander Fokkens at 7:30pm. There is a universal love for the music of Beethoven. Similar to a poet like Shakespeare, Beethoven's music seems to touch on the essence of humanity.
The orchestra will showcase the composer’s two Romances for Violin and the Symphony no. 7 in A major, which highlight how Beethoven can capture a mood or emotion, and through composition, bring it out into the open and explore what it means to the listener. Samson Diamond, leader of the Odeion String Quartet and Free State Symphony Orchestra concert master will be the soloist in the Romances.
According to Mr Fokkens, “These 2 works, along with the Ingoma of South African composer, Hendrik Hofmeyr, really reach out to the essence of being a young musician, which is why we chose them for the FSYO to perform. The young musicians encapsulate the beauty of the Romances and the Second movement, with joyful exuberance and song of the rollicking Finale and the songs from Ingoma.”
Wagner said of the 7th Symphony of Beethoven; “if anyone plays the Seventh, tables and benches, cans and cups, the grandmother, the blind and the lame, aye, the children in the cradle fall to dancing.”
To prove his point, it is reported that on one evening, Wagner danced to the entire symphony, accompanied on the piano by Franz Liszt.
How then, can music like this not bring out the excitement that comes with being young?
This exhilarating concert is free to the public and will commence at 19:30 on the 3rd of May.
