MEDIA RELEASE - FSSO premieres concerto movement for viola and orchestra by Stefans Grové, who was arguably one of the greatest composers on the continent!
Conductor: Bernhard Gueller
Soloist: Jeanne-Louise Moolman (viola)
Date: Thursday, 14 March 2019
Time: 19:30
Venue: Odeion
The FSSO celebrates a South African music icon this March with the world premiere of Stefans Grové Concerto for Viola and orchestra dedicated to FSSO and Odeion String Quartet violist and concert soloist, Jeanne-Louise Moolman, of which he only completed the first movement before his death in 2014. Grové is one of the most significant and important composers in the history of South Africa.
Jeanne-Louise’s career spans over twenty years of experience as principal violist for several professional orchestras in South Africa. She has performed as soloist with quite a few leading orchestras in the country. In November 2018 she represented the UFS and South Africa at the International Viola Congress in Rotterdam, where she was invited to perform works by South African composers.
Acclaimed for his “profound interpretations” and the excitement he elicits, Bernhard Gueller continually garners praise for the fresh approach he applies under his “amazingly suggestive baton”. With a reputation for his mastery of contemporary works, Gueller has commissioned several concerti for Symphony Nova Scotia and has served as music director, principal conductor and principal guest conductor with various orchestras, including being a guest conductor in South Africa for more than 20 years.
The concert is to be held on March 14th at the Odeion School of Music from 19:30 and will commence with Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No.3, which is an orchestral transcription of music for the lute – an intimate guitar-like instrument with a gently whispering sound. This is followed by the charming, yet technically demanding Viola Concerto in D maj (Stamitz).
Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 (his last symphony which forms part of a set of twelve symphonies he wrote for English audiences) is the main work after interval. Although quite a monumental work, it still reveals Haydn’s perennial wit and delight in the unexpected.
Admission:
Ticket prices are:
Adults - R100;
Students and Children 3 to 18 years – R40.
For enquiries, contact the FSSO on 051 401 2342, or visit the FSSO’s Facebook page (@ Free State Symphony Orchestra) for more information on the concert and regular updates.
