Kobus Malan is captivated by music as an art of expression and by its potential to develop people.
Kobus was a music teacher at the Musicon and oboist for PACOFS followed by a position with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2001 he created a new platform for music and fine arts known as Multi-podium for the Dutch South Africa Society in Amsterdam, rekindling cultural ties.
Many new compositions came to light. Afrikaans poetry was set to music, also combining African and European music instruments, then popular as cross-cultural art forms. These products were exported to music festivals in France and Lithuania.
A compact disc titled “Oboe in Africa” was compiled (2009) in collaboration with ethno-musicologists Anthony Caplan and Andrew Tracey.
At present he manages the Mayibuye Academy of Music in Kimberley focussing on music literacy programs for choirs and instrumental music, as well as a church music initiative aiming to re-establish the wealth of sacred classical music.
He will take to the stage with the FSSO on Saturday, 22 September at the Odeion School of Music OSM, UFS under the baton of Alexander Fokkens.
Do not miss out on this mélange of music, tickets are still available from Computicket.
