Include the FSSO Symphony Concert on Saturday 22 September as part of your Heritage Weekend plans, and join us in celebrating our immensely talented local orchestral musicians alongside the internationally renowned guest pianist Vitaly Pisarenko.
Amongst other local soloists, the award-winning Odeion String Quartet - which comprises of Samson Diamond (violin), Sharon De Kock (violin), Jeanne-Louise Moolman (viola) and Anmari van der Westhuizen (cello) - will be performing Elgar’s masterpiece, 'Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet and Strings', during the concert. Scored for a string quartet and string orchestra, Elgar originally composed it to show off the players’ virtuosity. The score soon came to be recognized as a masterpiece and is likened to a multi-layered symphonic poem for string orchestra.
The Odeion String Quartet was established as a full-time resident string quartet at the University of the Free State (UFS) in 1991. It is the only resident string quartet at a South African university. The Odeion String Quartet is a flagship of the UFS and symbolises the university’s commitment to the arts. It plays an important strategic role in the development of music for symphony orchestra and in classical music training in the Free State. All members of the quartet are FSSO principals and Free State Youth Orchestra mentors.
Get your tickets to the FSSO's next Symphony Concert on Saturday 22 September at any Computicket outlet. The programme for the evening will not only show off individual talent, but create an orchestral experience that will feel musically varied and poetically moving.
