“What is the point of Opera in the modern day world ?” This question is being asked more and more everyday.
In a world that moves so fast, why do we still perform works that seem to have no relevance to today ?
This is where people are wrong and all of us that are here this evening understand at least one reason why they are wrong, and that is that Opera is the one art form that encapsulates all art forms.
In a world where information travels so fast, we need the opportunity to slow down and let music, and especially the sound of the human voice, take us away from the constant noise that invades our everyday space.
We need places where, to succeed and present a perfect unified work, people need to overcome differences of opinion, backgrounds, generations and all the other hurdles that we encounter everyday as we build our new society.
The magnitude of the event, requires that so many people with so many different skills, are brought together to collaborate and find common ground where art, or at least entertainment, must be the unifying factor.
It is for the simple reason that an operatic performance requires so much more from us all to just happen, that the FSSO joined in partnership with the OSM in 2017, working to bring opera back to the glorious stages of Bloemfontein and the Free State as a whole.
Listening to our young singers, watching them as they guided by the experience of their teachers and mentors, working with the FSSO makes me believe in our future. Not just the future opera, but of our humanity.
Thank you for sharing in these performances and believing in the dream.
