The Odeion School of Music OSM, UFS and the Free State Symphony Orchestra collaborate on The Merry Widow operetta by Franz Lehar on the 3rd and 4th of August 2018 7:30pm at the Bloemfontein Civic theatre. In the light of last year’s successful production of Cavalleria Rusticana, and on requests from the public and students, the OSM in conjunction with the FSSO have undertaken to sustain this initiative and present another production in 2018.
The story is based on a rich widow and her countrymen’s attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband, with a South African adaptation to highlight and celebrate our own cultural norms, customs and simultaneously encapsulate the spirit of Ubuntu through the performing arts.

The production will be directed by Cape Town Opera’s renowned Artistic Director, Christine Crouse. She has more than thirty years’ experience of assisting and directing productions and managing this company. Christine has also been lecturing Theatre Craft at UCT Opera School for many years, which makes her the best choice to work with the OSM students, teaching them during this period the skills of acting, singing on stage and build their professional capacity.
Bloemfontein has been without opera productions for almost two decades, thus this collaboration which strives to answer the needs of the people of Bloemfontein and offer them a production that is impactful and of the highest professional standard possible.
