This year we have a National Youth Orchestra Winter Course in Bloemfontein in July, and a National Youth Wind Orchestra Summer Course in Cape Town. We are also delighted to welcome the Minnesota Orchestra, the first major American orchestra to tour to South Africa, for their nationwide tour, and for an Immersion Experience with our orchestra in August. Side by side rehearsals, attending performances by this world class orchestra, playing chamber music together – a life-changing opportunity exclusively for the National Youth Orchestra 2018! (We are particularly delighted to have Osmo Vänskä visit us again!)
To make the courses open to all who qualify to attend, bursaries, scholarships and payment plans are available. Young musicians wishing to apply must play an orchestral instrument, be of ¬at least Grade 7 music level and be resident in Southern Africa. Candidates should prepare a solo piece and a study of their choice to demonstrate their standard and fluency on their instrument. Your programme (that means both study AND piece together) should not exceed 4 minutes in length and you may make any required cuts within the time limit. No accompanists are required.
