The Free State Youth Orchestra (FSYO) will be plugging at our musical
heart strings one last time this year with a Dancing Carols concert
held on Thursday 30 November 2017 at Loch Logan Waterfront.
The concert is one of the FSYO’s community outreach initiatives that strive to take classical music to the people by offering free performances in public spaces and audience development through creative collaborations with other art forms.
The concert will be a festive fusion of music and dance and will include music like Silent Night, O Holy Night, Hark the herald angels sing, and Joy to the World, sung by Ella Kotze, with the sensational dancers from Dance Domination strutting their stuff to Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana’s Intermezzo, Vivaldi/Haubrich’s Amathunda and Ed Shereen’s beautiful Supermarket flowers.
“It’s an outdoor concert and people can expect a combination of Christmas music led by Ella Kotze. We’ve got some hip hop dancers from one of the local schools, so it’s sort of a mixed bag of young people playing,” said conductor Alexander Fokkens.
The FSYO has been doing a few free community concerts to expose more people to classical music and its vast variety. “Our goal with the concerts is for people to understand that the Free State symphony is here, that we play different types of music and that everyone can come to our concerts. It’s breaking down barriers and stereotypes, just showing people that there are other entertainment options in Bloemfontein,” he explained.
Fokkens said the community concerts have been well received and organisers always want them to come back. “We always have a lot of people stop and listen, the nice thing is people don’t have to stay there the entire time but they often stay for quite some time. And for a lot of the people who stop and listen, it’s often something new. And others just stop to watch. It’s not just about sound, but also about watching how people work together, how the orchestra members communicate with the conductor and the soloists. It’s really quite a spectacle.”
Dancing Carols is the FSYO’s last concert for the year, however, Fokkens added that they have big plans for next year. “We’ve got a bunch of big things planned for next year, with more community projects and a bit more dance and singing incorporated into our concerts,” he concluded.
Dancing Carols will be taking place on Thursday, 30 November at the Loch Logan Waterfront, Water Court from 17:00. Admission is any donations of tinned and dry foods, blankets, old clothes and shoes for charity.
