The Odeion Sinfonia will be performing on the 23rd of
September 2017 at the Odeion School of Music from 7:30pm, with young soloists Chris
van Zyl (cello) and Ashlin Grobbelaar (cello).
This orchestra is a string only orchestra housed in the Odeion School of
Music comprising string students studying at the school and string members of
the Free State Youth Orchestra. The
orchestra is under the direction of the highly acclaimed cellist and chamber
musician, Anmari van der Westhuizen (cellist of the Odeion String Quartet) who
has more than thirty years of experience in playing and conducting chamber
music.
Admission is free and the programme includes the following works:
Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten (1980) - Arvo Pärt (Born 1935)
Little Suite for string orchestra Op. 11 - Carl Nielsen (1865 - 1931)
Violoncelles Vibrez - Giovanni Solimma (Born 1962)
Serenade for Strings Op. 11 (1937) - Dag Wirén (1905 - 1986).
The principle aims of this orchestra are to provide excellent training
and valuable experience in string and ensemble playing, to adequately prepare
string students for orchestral playing, to present them with numerous ensemble
and orchestral concert playing opportunities and to generally promote quality
string and ensemble playing.
