The Free State Symphony Orchestra (FSSO) will host the long anticipated Youth Concerto Festival this coming spring, on the 2nd of September 2017. This event will take place in the Odeion and the FSSO’s resident conductor, Alexander Fokkens will be on the podium. The concert will feature eight talented young soloists who auditioned to perform with the FSSO earlier this year. The programme is a mélange of piano, violin, recorder and flute instrumentalists playing concertos by Mozart, Saint-Saëns, Ravel, Kabalevsky, Monti, Mouquet and Bruch. It also includes a vocalist (tenor) who will perform a famous aria from La Boheme (Puccini).

The youth concerto festival is one of the numerous activities that the FSSO has undertaken towards the education and promotion in orchestral playing at the highest level for young musicians, simultaneously developing their professional capacity. The orchestra’s main objective is to serve as an "integrated music-educational pipeline", which integrates orchestral education of the youth with orchestral performance to create a learning experience that will give learners the opportunity to follow a seamless path in music education.
