Odeion School of Music (OSM), in collaboration with the Free State Symphony Orchestra (FSSO), presents the complete one-act opera, #CavalleriaRusticana, a passionate love tragedy with moving melodies, including the famous Easter Hymn.
Cavalleria rusticana is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci. It was adapted from a play and short story written by Giovanni Verga and is considered as one of the classic verismo operas, it premiered on 17 May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
The performance includes the exceptional voices of OSM vocal students, voice lecturers Teresa de Wit (soprano) and Albertus Engelbrecht (tenor) and FSSO members under direction of conductor Alex Fokkens, and promises to be a breath-taking experience.
Other soloists include Lefa Sello (baritone), Lindiwe Mahlangu (mezzosoprano), and Anisja Smit (alto). The show, which will be part of the Vrystaat Kunstefees festivities, is taking place on Sunday, 16 July 19:30 and repeated Monday, 17 July 11:00. Both shows will be hosted at the Civic Theatre. Tickets are available from Computicket at R100 each.
