Conductor: Daniel Boico
Soloists: Francois du Toit
(piano)
Date: Saturday, 10 September 2016
Time: 10:30am
Venue: Odeion, UFS
The conductor Daniel Boico, who has been hailed in the press as “dynamic, vigorous, exciting and imaginative”, will conduct the Free State Symphony Orchestra in a performance on Saturday 10 September. Cape Town based pianist Francois du Toit will be the soloist in the Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major (Beethoven). Also on the programme are the Overture and Incidental Music from Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph’s Tempus Fugit. This concert is made possible by a grants from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and the Rupert Foundation.
The fast-rising conductor Daniel Boico is the newly appointed Associate Guest Conductor of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, Durban. His innate musical sensitivity paired with a keen ear and deep musicianship have produced exciting performances with orchestras in the U.S., Europe, Central and South America, Africa and Asia. As Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons, Boico lead all of the Philharmonic’s popular Young People’s Concerts, among other concerts, and covered 30 weeks in each season, including all tours, as well as assisted music director Alan Gilbert and visiting guest conductors. His debut with the New York Philharmonic took place in 2009, sharing the podium with Riccardo Muti, and was followed by his subscription debut in April 2011, when he replaced Kurt Masur on short notice in what the New York Times called "a smoldering performance" of Sofia Gubaidulina's Two Paths: A dedication to Mary and Martha for two violas and orchestra.
François du Toit is acknowledged as one of South Africa’s finest pianists, chamber musicians and music educators. He is Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Cape Town where he is also Head of Practical Studies. Francois has appeared with all the orchestras in South Africa since the age of 15, and while still a student in 1988 was selected with Steven De Groote to perform with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra on tour in the Republic of China. Since his days on the Music Faculty at the University of Potchefstroom he has been a member of The Potch Trio, which performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 1999, and now also appears with Franklin Larey as the Ixopo Piano Duo. He is a sought-after partner of visiting
international artists in recital for chamber music societies throughout South Africa, and a highly respected adjudicator at the various national music competitions.
