The Free State Symphony Orchestra will be ending off the year on a very high and grand note with Carl Orffs dramatic Carmina Burana showcase that will be hosted in the Sand du Plessis Theatre, at Pacofs.The concert will start at 20:00 on Saturday, 31 October.

The program promises to be full of thrills and frills, and includes a world renowned cast like South African soprano Magdalene Minnaar, who has entertained audiences across the globe with her versatile voice and enigmatic stage presence, evident in her acclaimed performances of the female lead in the international touring production Show Boat and The Phantom of the Opera. A recent KykNet Fiesta and Fleur du Cap nominee and SAMA winner, Magdalene has won numerous awards and prizes including the Mimi Coertse Bursary Competition, the Unisa Voice Competition (song prize) and Kanna Award as part of the South African Sopranos (Best Classical Production).

Lance Phillip, a tenor and acclaimed teacher in various facets of music including composition, choral studies and music history is also part of the all star line-up. He currently directs the Cathedral singers of St Michael and St Andrew, in addition to the Odeion academic choral ensemble.

Aubrey Lodewyk will be singing baritone, who apart from opera productions, is also a regular Lieder recitalist and performs sacred works like St Matthew Passion (JS Bach), St John Passion (JS Bach) and Elijah (Mendelssohn). He performed the role of Mandela in the world premiere of Mandela Trilogy in 2011 and again in its European debut in Cardif.

Alex Fokkens, the FSSO’s resident maestro, will be conducting a mass choir of approximately 150 people who will join an enlarged orchestra of about 65 members. All the choirs involved are local and include The Sentraal Hoërskoolkoor, Cantando@bloem, Odeion Choir, Eunice Vitae Cantamus Choir and members of Willem Postma Senior Choir.

The program includes the complete Carmina Burana work and will open with enigmatic and popular O Fortuna, that has featured in many blockbusters including; The Bachelor (1999), Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), Epic Movie (2007) and G-Force (2009). Concert goers can look forward to being captivated by the enlarged FSSO, together with a spectacular display of choral union.

Die Vrystaatse Simfonieorkes eindig die jaar op 'n hoë noot met Carl Orff se dramatiese Carmina Burana wat op Saterdag 31 Oktober om 20:00 in die Sand du Plessis-teater by Pacofs aangebied word.

Dit beloof om ʼn opwindende aand te wees met bekende sangers soos Magdalene Minnaar (sopraan), Lance Phillip (tenoor) en Aubrey Lodewyk (bariton), 'n massakoor van ongeveer 150 mense en 'n vergrote orkes van ongeveer 65 lede onder leiding van Alexander Fokkens.

Magdalene Minnaar het al gehore regoor die wêreld met haar veelsydige stem bekoor met bekroonde optredes in die internasionale toerproduksies van Show Boat en The Phantom of the Opera. Magdalene, wat vroeër vanjaar vir sowel ʼn Kyknet Fiesta as ‘n Fleur du Cap toekenning genomineer was, het al talle pryse verower waaronder die SAMA-prys, die Mimi Coertse Beurskompetisie, die Unisa Sangkompetisie en ʼn Kanna-toekenning.

Lance Phillip is ʼn dosent in koorleiding, komposisie en musikologie by die Odeion Skool vir Musiek aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat. Hy verwerf ʼn BMus-graad aan die Universiteit van Pretoria en ʼn MMus in koorleiding aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat. Hy maak in 2013 sy debuut as ʼn oratoriumsanger in die rol van die Evangelis in JS Bach se Kersoratorium onder leiding van Gerben Grooten. Lance, ʼn ervare koorleier is in 2011 as musiekdirekteur van die Bloemfonteinse Katedraal aangestel waar hy die katedraalsangers van St Michael en St Andrew dirigeer. Daarbenewens is hy ook dirigent van die Odeion koor.

Aubrey Lodewyk is een van ons land se mees talentvolle en veelsydige baritons wat afgesien van optredes in opera en blyspelproduksies ook 'n gereeld Lieder uitvoerings gee en in gewyde werke soos Matteuspassie (JS Bach), Johannspassie (JS Bach) en Elijah (Mendelssohn) optree. Sy vertolking van die titelrol in die wêreldpremière van die Mandela Trilogy in 2011 en daaropvolgende optredes in Cardiff (Wallis) en München (Duitsland) het groot lof in die pers verwerf.

Die kore wat aan die produksie deelneem is Sentraal Hoërskoolkoor, cantando@bloem, Odeion-koor, Eunice Vitae Cantamus Choir en lede van Willem Postma Senior Koor.
