By Elretha Britz Tuesda Tuesday 01 September 2015 05:00
The Etienne Rousseau Theatre in Sasolburg is an example of a theater
that works. Each week, a musical presentation, drama or dance production is
brought on stage and when one peruses through the annual program, which is
marked by an exciting selection of a variety in the different art forms, as
well as many international artists.
The first classical concert orchestra since the opening of the theater
began this year, and the theater manager Herman van Niekerk, has awarded the
Free State Symphony Orchestra and the Free State Youth Orchestra to give a
joint performance under the conductor Alex Fokkens .
The soloist is the popular pianist Charl du Plessis who shall present two
classics Gerald Finzi's Eclogue op. 10 for Piano and String Orchestra, and
Liszt's Totentanz.
Totentanz is an exciting work in the form of a set of variations and a
challenge for any pianist.
Eclogue is in line with many British compositions of nature, but with
fine embroidered melodies that captivate the attention.
Du Plessis a former Bloemfonteiner, is the latest Steinway artist in
Africa and also well known as a concert artist in jazz and classical music.
He is also, for the past 15 years, Nataniel's exclusive leader and
performs with his Charl du Plessis Trio domestically and abroad.
The concert at the theater in Sasolburg will begin on a rousing note
with Sibelius' Finlandia.
Thereafter, the famous two parts of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1
follows Morgenstimmung and Tanz in der Halle des Bergkönigs.
After the interval the orchestra continues the program with Three
Dances from Henry VIII of England by composer Edward German.
The concert concludes with the jolly España from French composer
Waldteufel.
The concert will take place on Heritage Day, 24
September, at 12:00 in the Etienne Rousseau Theatre. Tickets cost
R100 and are available at Computicket.
