Music lovers will get the opportunity to listen to two of the most famous works for organ and orchestra during the next concert of the Free State Symphony Orchestra. The Pretoria based organist Ockie Vermeulen will be the soloist in Albinoni’s famous Adagio in G minor as well as Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in G minor. Also on the programme are Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 and Arvo Pärt’s Fratres. The internationally acclaimed conductor Bernhard Gueller will be on the podium. This concert is made possible by a grants from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and the Rupert Foundation.

Albinoni’s Adagio has been used in several film soundtracks, including Gallipoli and Rollerball and it was also performed at the funeral of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. Fratres, in its many reincarnations has also appeared soundtracks, most notably There Will Be Blood, starring Daniel Day-Lewis.

Ockie Vermeulen is an active concert organist and music arranger. In 2011 he was invited to perform in Monaco where he played for as service which was attended by Prince Albert and Princess Charlene and also gave a solo recital. His debut CD, Highland Cathedral has been met with critical acclaim and has been topping the South African charts for 50 consecutive weeks. In November 2010 he released his second CD Arena on which he collaborated with musicians such as Christa Steyn, Wessel van Wyk, Charl du Plessis and Helen Vosloo.

For the last 13 years music director of Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax, Canada, Bernhard Gueller continues to enthral audiences with his profound and exciting interpretations. Well known to audiences internationally for the passion, mastery and drama he brings to the concert hall podium, Gueller is also acclaimed for his “profound interpretations”, the “stunning responses he gets from musicians” and the excitement he elicits. He is loved by musicians, critics and audience for his musical purity and continually garners praise for the fresh approach he brings to the podium. This is maestro Gueller’s third visit to Bloemfontein and the Free State Symphony Orchestra.

Musiekliefhebbers kry met die volgende konsert van die Vrystaatse Simfonieorkes die geleentheid om na twee van die mees geliefde werke vir orrel en orkes te luister. Die Pretoriase orrelis Ockie Vermeulen is Donderdag 13 Augustus die solis in die bekende Adagio in G mineur vir Orrel en Strykorkes van Tomaso Albinoni asook die Orrelkonsert in G mineur van Francis Poulenc. Bernhard Gueller is op die podium. Die orkes begin die konsert met Arvo Pärt se Fratres en na pouse speel hulle Robert Schumann se Simfonie No. 4 in d-mineur, op. 120. Hierdie konsert word moontlik gemaak deur die ondersteuning van die Nasionale Lotery Kommissie en die Rupert Stigting.

Albinoni se Adagio is al meermale in rolprentklankbane gebruik. Die twee bekendste voorbeelde hiervan is Gallipoli en Rollerball, terwyl dit ook in 1997 uitgevoer is met die begrafnis van Diana, Prinses van Wallis. Frates was gebruik in There Will be Blood met Daniel Day-Lewis in die hoofrol.

Ockie Vermeulen is ʼn aktiewe musikus wat benewens sy pos as orrelis van die NG gemeente Pretoria-Oos ook gereeld orreluitvoerings lewer. In 2012 word hy genooi om as solis in Monaco in die teenwoordigheid van Prins Albert en Prinses Charlene op te tree. In 2007 reik hy ʼn CD, Highland Cathedral, uit. Die CD word uitstekend ontvang en was vir langer as ʼn jaar op die SA Klassieke Top20-lys. Hy is ook een van die orreliste op die gewilde Heavenly Organ CD uitreikings. In 2011 reik hy sy nuwe CD, Arena, uit en werk daarop saam met bekende musici soos Christa Steyn, Wessel van Wyk, Charl du Plessis en Helen Vosloo. Hierdie CD word in 2011 vir ’n SAMA toekenning genomineer. In dieselfde jaar word hy uitgenooi om saam met die Charl du Plessis-trio op te tree by ʼn musiekkunstefees in Switserland wat met staande toejuigings ontvang is.
Bernhard Gueller is die afgelope 13 jaar musiekdirekteur van die Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax, Kanada. Hy besoek Suid-Afrika die afgelope 20 jaar op ʼn gereelde basis waar hy orkeste in die Kaap, Durban Pretoria en Johannesburg dirigeer. Hierdie is sy derde besoek aan Bloemfontein en die Vrystaatse Simfonieorkes. Gueller is bekend vir sy dramatiese vertolkings en aandag aan detail wat hom ʼn gewilde dirigent onder musici asook gehore in Suid-Afrika maak.
