Rest in peace Ron Gachè 1939 - 2019

Did you know... Franz Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 collected dust for nearly 200 years in the National Museum in Prague before it became a staple of the cello repertoire. Music historians had always known of the concerto’s existence, thanks to Haydn’s diligent records: the work is included in both of his personal catalogues, dating it circa 1765. Beyond those brief mentions, practically nothing was known about the concerto, including its whereabouts, and for years it was assumed lost. That all changed in 1961. One day, Oldřich Pulkert, an archivist of the National Museum in Prague, was digging through old documents collected from a chateau in Radenín, a tiny village in southern Bohemia. Within the papers, Pulkert found a set of orchestral parts signed by Joseph Weigl, the principal cellist in the Esterházy court orchestra from 1761 to 1768. Acclaimed cellist Jacques-Pierre Malan will play this impressive piece at the FSSO Symphony Concert on Saturday, be sure not to miss out!

Did you know... #Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major was dedicated to Count Franz von Oppersdorff, a relative of Beethoven's patron, Prince Lichnowsky. The Count met Beethoven when he traveled to Lichnowsky's summer home, where Beethoven was staying. Von Oppersdorff listened to Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D major, and liked it so much that he offered a large amount of money for Beethoven to compose a new symphony for him. Beethoven undertook the new work during the summer of 1806 and completed it in roughly a month, while also working on the Fourth Piano Concerto and revising his opera Fidelio, then still known as Leonore. The dedication was made to "the Silesian nobleman Count Franz von Oppersdorff". Come listen to this "sunny and cheerful" symphony as performed by the FSSO at the exciting FSSO Symphony Concert 8 June. Tickets are selling out fast, hurry and get yours today!

Did you know... #Mendelssohn's Heimkehr aus der Fremde, also known as Son and Stranger, is a one act 'liederspiel' which the composer suppressed after a private premiere. It's an entertainingly sweet essay in Mendelssohnian tension and fluency. Along the way we encounter 'echoes' of the Schumann Third Symphony and of Mendelssohn's own Midsummer Night's Dream and Schöne Melusine in the piece. It is a must for any Mendelssohn admirer to attend the FSSO Symphony Concert on Saturday, June 8 at the Odeion School of Music OSM, UFS from 19h30.
